     'Maithreem Bhajata' is a benediction composed in Sanskrit by Jagadguru Shri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati (Kanchi Maha-Periyavar). The song was set to a Ragamalika by composer Shri Vasant Desai. It was rendered at the United Nations on UN-day-1966 by Bharat Ratna Smt. M. S. Subbulakshmi and Dr. Radha Viswanathan and received a standing ovation.

      I have been trying for long to do Tamil translation of 'Maithreem Bhajata'. After a while, I realized that I am not competent enough to do the same and hence I surrendered and prayed to Bhagawan Sri Yogi Ramsuratkumar. Almost instantly the following lyrics flashed in the mind and hence I believe that this Tamil translation is close in meaning to the original Sanskrit song :
       

அன்புடன் நட்பால் உலகை நீ வெல்க;
தன்னைப்போலவே பிறரெனும் எண்ணத்தை கொள்க.
போரை வெறுத்து, போட்டியை தவிர்த்து;
ஓருயிரையும் வதையா பண்புடன் வாழ்க.
வேண்டியதை அருள்வாள் நம் தாய் பூமி;
ஆண்டவனே தயையுடை தந்தை நம் சாமி.
பெருந்தன்மையோடொழுக்கமும் கருணையும் பழகி;
அரும்மாந்தரனைவரும் வளமுடன் வாழி.


Lyrics & Meaning of the Original Sanskrit 'Maithreem Bhajata'

maitrīṃ bhajata akhilahṛjjetrīm - Cultivate Friendship and Humanity, which will conquer the Hearts of Everyone.

ātmavadeva parānapi paśyata - Look upon others as similar to yourself.

yuddhaṃ tyajata - Renounce war

spardhāṃ tyajata - Forsake (unhealthy) competition

tyajata pareṣu akramam ākramaṇam - Forgo unrightful aggression or acquiring by force

jananī pṛthivī kāmadughā(ā)ste - Mother Earth yields all that we require

janako devaḥ sakaladayāluḥ - God, our father, is most compassionate 

dāmyata - practice Restraint

datta - be kind and give unto others

dayadhvaṃ - Be Kind to others

janatāḥ - Oh People of the World

śreyo bhūyāt sakalajanānām - May All People attain happiness and prosperity.
